When I started making lamp shades 15+ years ago, I had no idea I was starting with one of the trickiest lamp shade materials: silk. You could say making silk lamp shades was my trial by fire, and after working with this material, creating shades with other fabrics seemed easy.
The outcome of creating a silk lamp shade is definitely worth the extra care involved in working with this delicate fabric. Extra sharp tools, just the right drying time for each glue step, and washing my hands 5+ times during the process ensure that I end up with the quality of handcrafted shade that I've become known for.
I always look for good visual texture in the fabrics I pick for my shades, and silk is one of the best. After all these years, my silk shades are still some of my favorites. With a lovely glow and a great nubby texture, I love them even more when lit in a dim room.

Please note: because of the bolt width of this silk, for shades larger than 16" in diameter, the fabric will need to be run the other way, making the grain run vertically on the shade instead of horizontally. This is shown in a couple of my photos, and is indicated in the size choices by 'VERT' after the size.

- The Fitter Option: Do you need a slip uno fitter or a threaded uno fitter?
- The Location of the Hardware: Will the shade attach at the top or bottom?
- The Drop Height Measurement**: How far will the hardware be recessed into the shade?
**There is no standard hardware drop for uno fitters. This is a highly custom measurement. If you choose the wrong drop height, your shade will not sit at the correct height on the lamp.

PRO TIP FOR LIGHT BULBS
For optimal performance, choose your bulb based on your shade size and not on what your lamp base can handle.
LEDs emit less heat than incandescent bulbs, but heat output is not the only thing that affects the well-being of your shade. Lumen output can affect how quickly a shade yellows with time.
'Wattage' is the measurement of energy used, and 'lumens' are the measurement of light output. The light bulb's lumen output is how we determine wattage equivalents. For example, a 60W incandescent light bulb and a 60W equivalent LED light bulb use different wattage but both give off a minimum of 800 lumens of light. Lumen output can affect a lampshade over time, and the higher the light bulb wattage/lumen output, the larger shade you should use.
The smaller the shade, the nearer it is to the light bulb, so I recommend not using more than a 40W equivalent on a 9 in. diameter shade.
